PingerWare has developed i²Calc, a software application that performs basic drug infusion calculations based on algorithms developed by Dr. Carter Jones.

Medical practitioners increasingly utilize infusions of potent medications to manage the medical conditions of their patients.  This occurs on a daily basis in the hospital, intensive care unit, operating room, and sometimes outpatient clinics.  The ability to calculate drug infusion doses, concentrations, and rate of infusion is imperative for the proper care of patients in these different medical environments.  i²Calc brings the power of a drug infusion calculator that can be applied to the inpatient, operating room, and outpatient settings to commonly used smartphone and desktop platforms thereby enabling the medical practitioner to quickly and conveniently manage infusions for the care of their patients.

Although other applications exist that can perform basic drug infusion calculations, none serve the pain medicine practitioner treating patients with intrathecal drug therapy.  Drug infusion calculations in this specific patient population is particularly challenging because multiple drugs may be infused concurrently at a single infusion rate, therefore individual drug concentrations must be varied to achieve a specific dose delivered for each drug.  In addition, the intrathecal drug delivery pump has a finite volume and the infusion rate must be adjusted to achieve an appropriate refill interval.  Not only is the refill interval affected by infusion rate, but some intrathecal pumps also allow the patient to self-administer boluses, the volume and frequency of which can be adjusted by the practitioner.  These must also be accounted for as they will affect the amount of drug delivered to the patient and consequently how quickly the pump will empty.  i²Calc will allow the chronic practitioner to quickly enter and easily adjust all variables for the comprehensive management of intrathecal drug therapy in chronic pain patients.
